Dog-fighting - 12 dogs seized
Robbins, IL (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Nov 20, 2007
County: Cook

Charges: Misdemeanor
Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Richard Colquitt

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

A Robbins man was arrested Tuesday, November 20, 2007 in a case involving 12 dogs that had injuries consistent with dogfighting after police got a tip about unlicensed dogs living in filthy conditions, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said.

Richard Colquitt, 39, of the 13800 block of Central Park Avenue, was charged with two felony counts of unlawful use of a weapon, one felony count of possession of cannabis, two counts of illegal possession of certain dogs by a felon and 12 counts of cruel treatment to animals and failing animal ownership duties, authorities said.

Authorities began investigating the man a week ago after hearing that he was keeping unlicensed dogs, Dart said in a statement. He is being charged under a new Illinois law that prohibits convicted felons from possessing vicious dogs.

Colquitt was convicted in 2000 of armed violence and possession of cocaine and served time in prison, Dart said.

Detectives searched Colquitt's house around 8 a.m. Tuesday and found 12 pit bulls, including three puppies that were about 4 months old, authorities said. The dogs had scars and one was severely emaciated, Dart said.

The dogs were kept throughout the house, with some in bedrooms and others in the basement, sheriff's spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.

Police also found $1,210, hypodermic syringes, $580 worth of marijuana, and two guns -- a .38-caliber special and a .44 Magnum, authorities said.

Animal control employees placed all the dogs in a local shelter, Dart said. A veterinarian will determine whether the dogs were injured in dogfights, Mateck said.

Because Colquitt faces felony charges, he was being held until a Wednesday bail hearing, she said.
