Case ReportAn abandoned cat that neighbors had been feeding was found shot through the neck with an arrow. A local resident found the animal and called authorities at which point the cat was taken to 10th Street Animal Hospital to have the arrow was removed. The cat is in the care of the Pitt County Humane Society.
Pitt County sheriff's deputies believe the incident was no mistake.
"It is thought that the cat was shot purposefully, and that the arrow was a target arrow and not a hunter's arrow," said Tonya Leggett, crime prevention deputy with the sheriff's office.
Investigators believe the arrow was shot downward by someone standing over the cat, and they're trying to find out who did it, Leggett said. The cat was found Nov. 13.
On Friday, two patches of hair were still missing from the cat's neck. When let out of a transport cage, he immediately ran behind a pair of file cabinets at the humane society's Tupper Drive office. Anita DeSantiz, the organization's shelter director, was able to pick the animal up, but he struggled to get free occasionally as she held him.
