more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dog stabbed, hanged
Mesa, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Jun 6, 2005
County: Maricopa

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Salvador Rodriguez

Case Updates: 4 update(s) available

A 23-year-old Mesa man upset with his wife tried to kill her dog by stabbing and hanging the animal six feet in the air with an electric cord, barbell and weights, police stated.

Salvador Rodriguez was arrested June 6  on suspicion of a felony charge of animal cruelty and criminal damage.

Rodriguez told police he tried to kill the dog with an eight-inch butcher knife after he found an e-mail from his wife to another man and found a photo of her with the man.

"It is sad to see that an individual would take out his anger over his relationship with his wife on an innocent animal," Mesa police Detective Tim Gaffney statted. "We are very lucky the wife came home when she did. If not, the animal would have bled to death."

The investigation began when Rodriguez's wife, Jeanne Espinoza, called Scottsdale police after she said she received a call at her Scottsdale workplace from her husband. Espinoza told police her husband threatened to kill her and harm himself. Scottsdale police asked Mesa police to go to the home to check on Rodriguez.

Mesa officers arrived at the home and discovered Rodriguez with superficial cuts on his arms. He was taken to a hospital for treatment but didn't mention the injured dog to police, Gaffney stated.

When Espinoza came home later, she found a broken glass vase in the kitchen and discovered her 5-year-old Queensland Healer dog, Khai, in the back yard, stabbed several times in the neck, police stated.

Mesa police returned to the home and found one end of an electrical cord tied to the dog's collar looped over a portable patio cover and the other end tied to a barbell with 45 pounds of weights attached. She collar was hanging six feet in the air, court records show.

Rodriguez allegedly told police he was upset because he thought he wife was having an affair and became agitated after talking to her. He threw the vase then went outside to hit a punching bag, he said. The dog started jumping on Rodriguez and then attacked him, so he went inside and grabbed a butcher knife to "hurt the dog," he told police.

Rodriguez said in court records that he didn't want the dog to suffer so he hung it for 20 to 30 minutes, Gaffney said. When Rodriguez thought the dog was dead, he lowered him and left him on the patio.

Gaffney said the dog was taken to an emergency animal hospital and was treated. He was released to his wife Espinoza June 7. Rodriguez remained in custody much of June 7. but was expected to be released.

Case Updates

Salvador Rodriguez thought his wife was cheating on him, so he took it out on her dog. He stabbed the animal in the chest and neck with a butcher knife, and then he hanged it by its neck for 20 minutes. Miraculously, the dog survived. Also miraculously, Rodriguez's wife didn't leave him.
A Maricopa County Superior Court judge sent Rodriguez to jail for six months and put him on probation for three years. Judge Douglas Rayes also banned Rodriguez from owning animals and ordered him to serve 100 days of community service and to get counseling.

According to prosecutor Tony Church, who handles animal-cruelty cases, the 33-year-old Rodriguez quarreled with his wife at their Mesa home. Rodriguez, an unemployed karate instructor, went outside to take out his anger on a punching bag. When the 5-year-old Queensland heeler jumped up on him, he grabbed an 8-inch butcher knife and stabbed the dog several times. Then, "to put it out of its misery," he looped a cord around the 50-pound dog's neck and hanged it from a patio support. Eventually, he cut it down.
Rodriguez also called his wife at work and made threats against her.

In December 2005, Rodriguez pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals and use of a telephone to terrify. A weapons charge against him was dismissed.

A Mesa man who police say admitted to stabbing and hanging a dog will go to jail for at least four months under a plea deal reached Thursday.
Salvador Rodriguez, 23, also will be placed on probation for a yet-to-be determined period, and he can't own or control any animal during that time.
Rodriguez, who pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court, also must attend anger management and domestic violence counseling, complete 100 hours of community service and submit to a psychological examination.

Kim Noetzel, Arizona Humane Society spokeswoman, said the conviction was the "best news I've heard all day."

"We certainly hope this sends a message the crime of animal cruelty is no longer being ignored," Noetzel said.

Rodriguez is accused of abusing the Queensland Heeler on June 6 after he became suspicious that his wife was having an affair, police said.

Rodriguez broke a vase and hit a punching bag, causing the dog to jump on him. Rodriguez admitted to stabbing the dog with an 8-inch knife and then hanging it so it wouldn't suffer. The dog survived.

Rodriguez is to be sentenced Jan.12.
