Horses that were living in a stable in the Bronx have been removed. After receiving numerous complaints about the stable on Pelham Parkway, the ASPCA and several city agencies raided the stables on January 11, 2006 and discovered they say unsanitary conditions and sick horses inside.
Of about 15 horses boarded here, a veterinarian examined four who were clearly not well taken care of. They were sent to the Claremont Stables on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
The ASPCA says the owner of the four horses, Arlene Greaves, was arrested for animal cruelty, assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.
Community members who had been fighting to shut the stables down were pleased to see action taken Wednesday. "We're all relieved," said John Fratta of Community Board 11. "This was a long time coming and now we can really develop this into something nice. Whether it's going to be a stable or any other kind of development, it is something that will lend to the beauty of Pelham Parkway."
