A Columbia man has been accused of animal cruelty after police found chained in a back yard four Great Pyrenees dogs � two of which were dead, the others starving and barely alive, authorities said.

John C. Davidson, 57, faces a charge of cruelty to animals. He left the dogs chained in the yard of his former residence at 900 Eastview Drive when he moved to a new house at 907 Sixth Ave. in the Riverside neighborhood, said a report by Columbia police Officer Andrew St. Clair.

Neighbors told officers that they had not seen Davidson in two months and that they thought he had moved away, the officer wrote.

When Davidson was found, he told officers that he was ''afraid of the neighborhood and didn't return for his dogs,'' St. Clair's report stated.

Mary Jane Holcomb, an animal caretaker at the Maury County Animal Shelter, called the situation ''horrible.''

One of the surviving dogs was taken to the shelter, the other ran off and is missing. The dog at the shelter is ''nothing but skin and bones,'' she said. ''He's a walking skeleton.''

Davidson is scheduled to appear in Maury County General Sessions Court on Aug. 18 to face charges in the case, St. Clair stated.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to 11 months, 29 days in jail or a fine not to exceed $2,500, or both.

Maury County Animal Shelter President Mary Ruth Rogers said the case of two dead Great Pyrenees dogs and two that were found malnourished underscores the need for more donations to the shelter's ''Angel Fund.''

''This is a fund we use for injured and abused animals,'' she said.

One of the surviving dogs is at the shelter; the other ran off and is missing.
