Case ReportSeven dogs were found chained to a pole with their muzzles wrapped in duct tape early Wednesday in Salem and police are trying to figure out who is behind the animal abuse.
A humane society worker shows where one of the dogs was wrapped with duct tape.
The visibly traumatized dogs were abandoned at the corner of Center and Norman, a residential area of Salem, said Sara Labberton, a spokesperson for the Humane Society of the Willamette Valley, the facility that is now caring for the dogs.
"This was a highly unusual case needing urgent attention," added HSWV kennel manager Jimmy White, who assisted in the rescue. "We were able to transport the animals to the shelter, remove the duct tape from their muzzles, and feed them."
White said the dogs are shy, but seem to be recovering well.
Humane society workers said the dogs appear to be shaken by the abuse.
After a mandatory wait of three days, the animals may be put up for adoption, depending on the status of the investigation. The animals, described as shepherd mixes ranging in age from 10 months old to three years, will get carefully evaluated for adoption based on temperament and health, Labberton said.
"We are working closely with police to find and prosecute whoever mistreated these dogs," added HSWV executive director Susan Carey.

Six of the seven dogs found chained to a pole with their muzzles wrapped in duct tape last month in Salem are now up for adoption.
The Humane Society of the Willamette Valley has cared for the dogs since they were rescued on Oct. 27 and police are still trying to figure out who was behind the animal abuse.
The dogs had to be evaluated for adoption after a required period of time went by, to give the owner a chance to come forward. But the owner never contacted the shelter.
The seventh dog did not pass the standard temperament test, so it will remain at the shelter for now.
Anyone with information that may help in the investigation is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 503-588-6123 or 503-588-8477.
People interested in adopting the dogs can contact the HSWV at (503) 585-5900, ext. 327 or stop by between noon and 7 p.m., Monday though Friday or between noon and 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Adoptions stop one hour before close of business. |
