Puppy dragged by bicycles, wrapped in wire - (Bogata, TX - US)

Case Report

A black Labrador mix puppy, being dragged to his death by �two or three kids� on bicycles, was rescued by a trucker who was passing through Bogata Friday morning. The unidentified trucker stopped his truck, unsuccessfully chased the boys on foot, then put the puppy into his truck and drove him 23 miles to Paris to the animal shelter.

Fortunately, the puppy, estimated at 12 to 14 weeks old, arrived just as Melissa Brunette, president of the Lamar County Humane Association, was bringing by some towels that had been donated to the shelter.

�A wire had been wrapped around the puppy�s neck, around the right front leg and on around the chest. The wire had just cut through his skin. It almost cut him in half,� Brunette told The Paris News.

She rushed the dog over to Lamar Veterinary Clinic and asked Dr. Bob Ables if he could save the dog.

Ables warned her it would be expensive, Brunette said, because the dog was so seriously wounded.

The humane association has an emergency fund, so Brunette authorized the estimated $300 in operating expenses to save the puppy�s life.

It was like someone put a coathanger around the puppy�s neck and under his right armpit and then dragged him behind a bicycle for quite a while, Ables said.

�We put him all back together. I didn�t count how many stitches it took. Probably more than a hundred. It took me about an hour. The wire had cut about half an inch deep, way down to the muscle. The wounds encircled his body except for a space about an inch under his neck,� Ables said.

The dog was anesthetized for the surgery and was given antibiotics and pain medicine. The puppy would be kept at the veterinary clinic over the weekend, Ables said.

�He�s all fixed now. He�ll be fine. He�s had kind of a rough start in life. He just needs a home now,� Ables said.

The humane association will advertise the dog in an attempt to get someone to adopt him, Brunette said.

Asked if they had given the puppy a name, Brunette said, �We probably should call him Lucky.�
