Dog starved so it would feed on puppies
Rimrock, AZ (US)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jan 2, 2005
County: Yavapai

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Danny Gene Lane

On January 2, 2004, Yavapai County Sheriffs Office Animal Control officers received a call regarding an extremely thin and neglected female dog on Montezuma Ave in Rimrock. The dog had been at large and was familiar to Animal Control. In the process of handling the dog, a pit-bull mix, the officer made contact with a 14-year-old girl who stated that the dog belonged to her brother, 19-year-old Danny Gene Lane, and that Lane was intentionally starving the dog in the hopes that she would eat her litter of eight pups so that he would not have to deal with them.

The emaciated mother dog and her puppies, approximately three weeks of age, were allegedly being kept locked in a small motor home. Reports state that the interior of the motor home was entirely covered in feces and urine and that the pups all had numerous sores on their bodies, some were open and weeping, that had not been treated.

The witness told YCSO that she had been sneaking food and water to the dogs because Lane had threatened to hurt her and her mother if they fed the dogs. When Lane was found and questioned, he admitted he had not seen or checked on the animals in three days. He also admitted he had not given thought to them as he was having relationship problems and was upset by that.

The dogs were taken to a shelter where they were examined and treated. At this time the pups are being hand-fed because their mothers milk has dried up due to starvation. The small, white, mix-breed puppies and their mom are doing well and will be put up for adoption from the Morning Starr Animal Sanctuary.

Lane was arrested and charged with two counts of Animal Cruelty, one for Abandonment and one for Inhumane Treatment. He is being held in the Prescott jail.
