Phoenix police today arrested a 17-year-old boy for allegedly nabbing his neighbor's puppy and setting him on fire, badly burning the animal's genitals, paws, belly, haunches and torso.
The teen was taken into custody in the 400 block of west Minton, where the incident allegedly occurred.
Police on scene said they plan to charge the teen with felony animal abuse in connection with the horrific case (Phoenix Police DR # 51133083).
The puppy, a German shepherd approximately 5 months old, sustained painful second and third-degree burns over about 50 percent of his body. His prognosis is guarded. Much of the flesh around his penis and belly is charred, as are portions of his torso, tail end and paws.
An Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician� rescued the pup, provided critical care in the field, and then transported him to the AHS Second Chance Animal Hospital� for extensive treatment.
According to police, the alleged incident occurred Sunday night, after the teen reportedly nabbed the puppy from a neighbor. He allegedly bragged about using gasoline as the accelerant to set the dog on fire and reportedly poked him with a stick while he burned.
The puppy's owners found the dog and called police. Area residents told investigators that the teen has threatened the pup in the past.
