A puppy that is only about 8 weeks old was found abused and abandoned next to a dumpster at a convenience story at Bonforte and Highway 50 in Pueblo.
An employee at the store found the pup, a Jack Russell Terrier mix and called Pueblo Animal Services. He had been spray painted and apparently burned by a cigarette.
He has been named Trooper, and is recovering. He could be put up for adoption as early as a week from now. If you have information on this case, please contact: 544-3005
Case UpdatesA 1-pound, 4-ounce puppy found next to a dumpster of the Loaf 'N Jug at Bonforte Boulevard and U.S. 50 Bypass a week ago remains under veterinary care.
What veterinarians first thought were cigarette burns covering the 7- to 8-week-old puppy are most likely puncture wounds that have abscessed, said the director of Pueblo Animal Services, Donna Straub.
The Jack Russell Terrier mix was found in a small carrier, possibly a child's toy, with a red bottom, Dalmatian-spotted top and a "102 Dalmatians" logo on it.
"His condition is up and down," Straub said Friday. "This morning, he was not so good. He could walk around and eat on his own Thursday, but today he's just been a little more lethargic."
Straub expects the puppy, Trooper, to survive, but there is a possibility the animal will have permanent damage.
The shelter has received at least 25 calls from people requesting to adopt the puppy.
After he is released from veterinary care, Trooper will live in a pre-approved foster home until the shelter decides on a method of adoption, Straub said.
The abuse of Trooper disgusts Schultz, and he's hopeful enough people are fired up enough to donate to the reward fund.
"We can't get anything done with $100 or $200," he said. "But if we can get this to grow, we might be able to find (out) who did this. We have to let it be known that this is not going to be tolerated in our society."
People interested in donating a share of the reward money may call Animal Services at 544-3005.
Anyone who has information about the incident or saw the carrier being placed by the dumpster is also encouraged to call the shelter. A Loaf 'N Jug employee, who discovered the dog, said the carrier was placed there between 7 and 11 a.m. Sunday. Informants will remain anonymous. | Source: The Pueblo Chieftan - July 30, 2005 Update posted on Aug 7, 2005 - 3:06PM |
