Dead dogs dumped at roadside, breeder charged

A South Delsea Drive woman was charged with animal cruelty offenses on July 28 after admitting she discarded a bag of dead dogs found along Mill Road, according to the Cumberland County SPCA.
Evelyn Carrion was charged with failure to provide proper veterinary care to a litter of American bulldog pups, according to Bev Greco, who oversees cruelty investigations for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Several months ago, Carrion's dog gave birth to a dozen puppies. A couple died at infancy and others were sold, Greco said.
Three dogs, who were not properly vaccinated, succumbed to parvovirus -- an often fatal infection that begins as an upper respiratory ailment.
"She didn't know what to do with them," Greco said.
Carrion allegedly wrapped each dog in plastic, bundled them in a bag and dumped them along Mill Road, she said.
The person who found the dogs alerted the SPCA, who put out a request July 27 for information. A tip came July 28 morning that led investigators to Carrion's door.
"She denied it at first," Greco said.
But when the SPCA said it would take the evidence to be fingerprinted, investigators said, Carrion confessed.
Parvovirus is preventable. Officials recommend that dogs older than 6 weeks old be vaccinated.
"She was selling these dogs for $300 to $800," Greco said. "But she didn't have money for the vaccine."
Greco urged anyone who received a dog from Carrion to seek immediate care for the pet to ensure it has the parvovirus shot. References |
