Ronald Edward Lawrence and his wife, Betty Dorothy Lawrence, both of Pyramid Hill, allowed horses and cattle in their care to starve to death between October, 2002, and January, 2003, near Kerang.
They pleaded guilty to multiple animal cruelty charges during a hearing in the Kerang Magistrates Court in 2004, but appealed their sentences in the Bendigo County Court in September 2005.
Disturbing photographs published showed some of the neglected animals, with animal experts believing about 80 livestock, including foals and pregnant mares, had been malnourished and starved.
However, the appeal was unsuccessful, with the court upholding the nine-month jail sentences imposed on each of them.
With seven months of each sentence suspended, both will spend two months in jail.
They have also been banned from owning grazing animals for five years. References« Back to Search Results
