Yesterday, Pet-Abuse.Com entered the
5,000th case into our cruelty
database. It seems inconceivable that only 3 and a
half years ago, we had under 200 cases.
Benchmarks such as ours are always a double-edged
sword. While we're thrilled that this project, which
started off as just an idea, has come so far in such a
short time, we can never truly celebrate
since we know that each goal we meet means more
animals were made to suffer at the hand of man.
On July 27, the San Diego Union Tribune published
a wonderful article
on our animal protection efforts, and just a day
later, we received a certificate of recognition from
the California State Assembly.
I think back to early 2002, sitting in the office of
Capt. Ken
Beauregard, who was the head of San Diego Humane
Law Enforcement at the time, explaining this idea I
had, and asking for his support.
For those of you
who have not met Capt. Beau in person, he's a large
man - over 6 feet tall, and quite imposing to
someone of my stature (a meager 5 feet). I recall
being quite nervous while looking up at him from my
chair.
I thought to myself "What am I doing? I don't
belong here! Have I lost
my mind?" Perhaps I had, but
Capt. Beau gave me
(and my crazy idea) a shot - a fact that helped
shape our future probably more than
he realizes.
I would like to take a moment to step back from
the cruelty cases and extend a heartfelt thank you
to those individuals who have helped us get where
we are. There are too many to name, but every
single person who has reached out to us has had a
profound impact on our course.
It has been an extraordinary journey for me - painful
at times, but so rewarding, and I am honored to walk
among you and consider you colleagues and friends.
I look forward to the things we will continue
accomplish together in the years to come.
That said, I now return you to your normally
scheduled newsletter...
In our continuing efforts to make animal cruelty case
information easily accessible, and to learn more
about patterns and profiles of animal cruelty crimes,
we have introduced four new searchable fields to the
animal abuse database.
It is our hope that these new fields will be able to
provide us additional information over time.
